Men with Guns (2025)
These pieces are blown up images from a men’s sporting book from the 60’s or 70’s. The dots of the halftone printing process are evident in the large scale, emphasizing the era from which they originated. They are vague and interpretable as they are clearly men with guns, but their motives aren’t obvious out of context. Are they hunters? Are they militia? Their poses obscure their faces so we are left with an unsettling feeling of wariness as we stumble on these giant figures along a path or under a bridge. They are clearly out of context due to their scale, but they also blend into the cityscape as graffiti and seem like they’ve been around a while due to their vintage quality. They represent something that is everpresent regardless of if it steps into the light. When it can’t be seen in the open it’s in the book in your basement. It’s an idea that could be threatening or could offer protection. And that lack of clarity between threat and protection may be the most important characteristic of that idea.
